What is an Accountable Body?

An accountable body holds legal and financial responsibility for a funded programme on behalf of a partnership or consortium. Many programmes involve multiple delivery partners, each contributing their own expertise, reach, and resources. The accountable body sits at the centre of this. It holds the grant or contract with the funder, ensures compliance with funding conditions, manages financial flows to partners, and maintains overall governance and performance accountability.

Funders and commissioners appoint an accountable body to create a single, trusted point of responsibility. This ensures clarity over how public or charitable money is used and what outcomes it achieves. The Women’s Organisation has extensive experience in this role. We have acted as accountable body for regional, national, and cross-border programmes across health, enterprise, employment, and education.
