Women’s Workplace Wellness: Case Study

Women’s Workplace Wellness (WWW) was a national pathfinder programme supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) across England to better understand and respond to women’s health in the workplace.

The Women’s Organisation was the accountable body and lead delivery partner, working with clinical experts, legal specialists, academic institutions, and national business networks to deliver a scalable, evidence-based model.

What was Women’s Workplace Wellness?

Women’s Workplace Wellness aimed to improve health and employment outcomes for women by equipping employers with the tools, knowledge, and confidence to support reproductive health at work.

The programme focused on breaking down stigma around menstruation, menopause, fertility, and neurodivergence, while supporting SMEs to introduce practical policies and cultural change.

Through a flexible, hybrid model, WWW provided:

  • Digital learning via a dedicated platform
  • Workplace toolkits and policy templates
  • Accredited advocacy training
  • Webinars, podcasts, and seminars

Developed in response to the UK Government’s Women’s Health Strategy (2022), WWW translated national policy into practical action for SMEs.

Programme Reach and Impact

  • 5,700+ SMEs engaged
  • 1,595 individuals trained
  • 225 accredited Workplace Wellness Advocates

The programme delivered measurable change, including:

  • Increased awareness and confidence among employers
  • Introduction of workplace policies on menopause and menstrual health
  • More open workplace cultures and improved wellbeing
  • Early evidence of improved staff retention and reduced absenteeism

Participants described a clear shift from silence to action in how women’s health is understood and supported at work.

The programme was supported by a high-level oversight board chaired by Dr Ruth Hussey, bringing together national leadership across health, business, and academia. Members included representatives from the Institute of Directors (IoD), Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), The Open University, Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care Board (ICB), and national clinical leadership including Dame Lesley Regan and Professor Paula Briggs.

  • Legal partners including Morecrofts LLP
  • National business organisations including the Federation of Small Businesses, Institute of Directors, and the Charities Commission
  • Strategic health partners including NHS organisations and the Cheshire and Merseyside ICB

How was Women’s Workplace Wellness funded?
